9. La Rinconada, Peru
rem
The La Rinconada is a small mining town in the Peruvian Andes which is located nearly 17,000 feet above sea level. Also considered as the highest city in the world, the La Rinconada also has a dubious honor as a destination for poor and desperate workers. Located over a permanent glacier, this city can be reached only by treacherous and winding mountain roads. With a population over 30,000, this city is also considered as one of the toughest country to live because of its traveling and the altitude sickness. Extracting gold from beneath the ice inside the nearby caverns is the main business of the inhabitants of this shanty town.
