Chandragiri Fort Kasaragod

Chandragiri Fort, built in the 17th century, located in Kasargod District of Kerala. This is another popular tourist attraction which is located south-east of Kasargod town. It is a large square-shaped fort situated beside a river. It was built in the 17th century by Sivappa Nayak of Bedanore. The fort is famous for its architectural beauty and rich collection of well-maintained articles which give tourists a chance to see the glory of yesteryears.


It is said in legends that Chandragiri Fort was the capital of Vijayanagara Empire is also a famous attraction in the neighborhood of the beach. It is situated just four kilometers from the beach. This large square fort is 150 feet above sea level and subjugates an area of about seven acres by the side of the river Payaswini. The fort is now in remnants.
The fort has an exciting past to mention. In earlier days, the river was measured to be the border of two powerful kingdoms Kolathunadu and Thulunadu. When Thulunadu was captured by the Vijayanagara Empire, the Kolathunadu kings lost the Chandragiri region to them. During the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire, the area was administratively looked after by the Keladi Nayakas of Ikkeri.

When the Vijayanagara Empire fell in the 16th century, Vengappa Nayaka declared independence. Later Shivappa Nayaka took over the reins. He built a chain of forts of which Chandragiri is part.
