Church of St John Baptist
The church of St. John the Baptist was founded by the Jesuits in Colva in 1581; but due to marshy conditions of the place, the church was transferred to Monte Hill of Benaulim in 1596. The church served the villages of Benaulim, Colva and Seraulim. Soon after 1596, the present church was built in the ward that was later called âÂÂProvoacaoâÂÂ.
Situated in Benaulim village near Benaulim beach, Church of St John the Baptist of Goa is famous for its exquisite architecture, based on the type Goan Christian style.
The Church of St. John the Baptist is one of the most famous churches in the entire state of Goa. Situated on a hill beyond the Benaulim town, this church was originally built near the shore and was shifted to this present location in 1956.
The church features low domes, four storeyed towers and rococo. Main altar inside the church has plain panelling and gallery in cornice design. Father Joseph Vas, who was born in Benaulim, was baptised in this chapel.
