Lighthouses are a constant source of attraction for travelers as you are able to get a glimpse of the beautiful sea and the nearby places. Due to the high maintenance expense and the invention of new electronic navigation devices, numerous lighthouses have declined. Some have even been converted into hotels. Green Cape, Australia
The Green Cape lighthouse situated in New South Wales, Australia was built in the year 1883 and it is the second largest lighthouse in the state. It is the most elevated lighthouse on the east coast and is surrounded by bush lands and coastal views. Accommodation is provided for visitors at Head Keeper's cottage and Assistant Keeper's Cottage. Ben Boyd National Park, cliff and ocean can be seen from the window. The lighthouse is open for visitors few days in a week.
Hook Head, Ireland
It is the oldest lighthouse in Ireland, built nearly 7 centuries back. It is located on the other side of the estuary opposite Dunmore east. Apart from a short closure in the 17th century it has served sailors and shipping for many years. The visitor centre is open every day and there are guided tours. One can climb the 115 steps to get a beautiful glimpse of the sea and inland. Facilities include the light house cafe and craft shop.
Cape Hatteras, US
It is located on Hatteras Island, in the outer banks of North Corolina. It is also known as America's lighthouse and its height is 208 feet. The light at the top is automated and visible every 7.5 sec's. The current building was first lit in 1871 and in 2000, due to erosion the tower was moved from its original location. A visitor's centre and museum is there at the site. It is fully open to the public from early April until mid October.
Gibbs Hill, Bermuda
It is the oldest cast iron lighthouse in the world, which stands on a hill in Southampton Parish. The lamp was first lit in the year 1846. The lighthouse has 185 steps to the top in 8 flights. One can see the whole of Bermuda including The City of Hamilton, South Shore Park and beautiful beaches from this lighthouse. Early in the year, you might be able to see migrating whales. A lighthouse tea room and a restaurant function at the base of the tower.
