The lush icy waters pass through some dry and interior lands of Ladakh. River Zanskar begins from a high plateau of Sarchu, bordering Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Originally known as the Tsarap, the river makes way from the hard mountains present at the Western Himalayas with a total of grade five rapids. The best season of visit is from July to August, as the winters are frozen to ice. Zanskar is divided into two branches. Firstly, the Doda where the first branch flows towards the east and later, the second branch from two tributaries, the Kargyag and Tsarp River.
