Kolaba Fort

fort

Located at a distance of over two kilometers off the coast of Alibag,Mumbai, the Kolaba fort is a popular tourist destination in India.
The fort was strengthened and built by Shivaji after having the whole of the Konkan under his command in 1662. It was later used as a base to launch raids on English ships. Though a seaside fort, Kolaba has its fresh water wells as an interesting feature. Its waist level deep waters in the monsoon season make it another interesting destination where one can reach by wading all the way. Boats can be used at times of high tide.

Some other interesting features that make Kolaba an interesting tourist destination are the temples and fortifications around, the carving of tigers, peacocks and elephants on the entrance arch ,a temple of Ganesha at the water tank and the shrines of gods like Mahishura, Padmavati and deities at the entrance.
