World's 6 Fastest Vanishing Natural Wonders
3) The Maldives
Maldives is an island nation that houses 1190 coral islands, surrounded by the Indian Ocean. Palm fringed islands cocooned by turquoise water, filled with schools of tropical fishes and shores like castor sugar describe the beautiful Maldives. It is the smallest Asian country both in population and the land area. Besides, Maldives is the lowest country in the planet with an average ground level of 1.5 metres above sea level.
The purest beauty of Maldives was devastated by tsunami, the earthquake in the Indian Ocean on 26 December 2004. Only nine islands of the island nation were managed to escape from the destruction, while fifty-seven islands faced real damage and six islands were fully destroyed. In March and April 2012, Mohamed Nasheed, the former president of Maldives said that "If carbon emissions continue at the rate they are climbing today; my country will be underwater in seven years."
