Srirangapatna is situated at a distance of 120 Kms from Bangalore on Bangalore Mysore highway is a place with reverberating History and Culture. The town that had its beginning in 12thcentury, under the celebrated Hoysala kings the site was later chosen for a fort in the 15th century. A local chieftain built the fort during theVijayanagara times. The strategic position of the fort was realized by the conquering king Raja Wodeyar of Mysore who made it his capital in 1610.
History of Srirangapatna:
During the rise of Hyder Ali, the general of Mysore king, Srirangapatna again came into prominence. Hyder Ali and his much famed son Tipu Sultan converted Srirangapatna into a fortified city. That continued for many decades as the power center of south India. Between 1766 and 1799 four wars were fought between the English East India Company and the Mysore, known in history as the Mysore Wars.
The first two were decisive against the Company forces. In that third Mysore War, Tipu Sultan suffered greatly and in the treaty that ensued he had to relinquish a great part of his kingdom (Mysore) to the allied forces of East India Company. The fourth and that last of Mysore war saw the fall of Tipu. The final battle , "Siege of Seringapatam" ,was fought in this island. After a long siege the fort of Srirangapatna was breached. Tipu Sultan was killed in the pitch battle that followed the siege. The English reinstalled the Wodeyars of Mysore as the ruler of Mysore. After the fall of Tipu, Srirangapatna lost its significance as a capital. The English troops used it as a garrison for some times before moving it out to Bangalore.

Ranganathaswamy Temple:
The Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangapatna enshrines Lord Vishnu as Ranganatha. It is said that the Ganag ruler Tirumalaiya built this temple in the 9th century.Srirangapatna was the capital of Tipu Sultan and it is said that both Tippu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali made generous endowments to the Ranganathaswamy temple. This enormous temple has fort like walls and an intricately carved gopuram. The architecture is a mixture of the Hoysala and Vijayanagar styles.
Sangam:
The Sangam is the place where the River Loakpavani joins the River Cauvery. This is a popular picnic spot and is a beautiful place.
Srirangapatna Fort:
It is from the Fort that Tippu launched his attack against the British. There is an obelisk in the fort in the place where he died, after being betrayed by his own men. Inside the fort there is a mosque and the Ranganathaswamy Temple and outside the fort is the tomb of Tippu, the Gumbaz.
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary:
Located in proximity of Srirangapatna on the bank of Cauvery River, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is one of the 'must visit' attractions of the area. Made by a group of six islands, this sanctuary sprawls over an area of .67 sq km. Declared as a bird sanctuary in the year 1940, this site is at its best between June to October.
Gumbaz, Srirangapatna:
This 20 metre high structure is mainly known as the burial place of Tipu Sultan, as well as his parents Hyder Ali and Fatima Begum. Many other nobles and relatives of Tipu Sultan have also been laid to rest here.
Daria Daulat Bagh
Erected in 1784, Daria Daulat Bagh is popularly known as the Summer Palace of Tipu Sultan. Haider Ali started the construction of this structure, though it was completed by his son Tipu Sultan. Counted among the 'must visit' sites of the region, the palace was given the status of a National Monument in 1959. All travellers passing by Srirangapatna must visit this site.
