Tasmania is an Island State
Discover Tasmania, the official tourism website for Tasmania, offers everything you need to plan your holiday. Explore the state's five unique regions, find out what's on, uncover local secrets and book your accommodation or activities online. Tasmania is a pure and rejuvenating destination where you will find the freshest in regional produce and intriguing wildlife including the iconic Tasmanian devil.

Wilderness and Nature
The Tasmanian World Heritage Area has a greater range of natural and cultural values than any other region on earth. And with 40 per cent of the island protected as national parks and reserves, you don't have to travel far to be walking through ancient rainforest.

With accessible wilderness and plenty of wildlife sanctuaries, Tasmania is the ideal destination to get up close with native Australian animals. See wombats, wallabies, pademelons, endemic birds and more. It's also the one place on earth you'll find a Tasmanian devil in the wild.

Food and Wine
In Tasmania, you can stop by road side stalls with lush berries, shuck oysters fresh from the sea, sample fine Belgian truffles and pick up a bottle of bubbly from wine country so fine, it's rumoured to be second only to Champagne itself.

Ideal Self-Drive Destination
Tasmania is easy to explore by car- it is compact, the roads uncrowded and scenery varied. The benefit of its size means you can stand atop a mountain and feel sand between your toes on the same afternoon drive.
A place of wild beauty and Australia's smallest state, the biggest thing about Tasmania is in fact its size. Unlike its larger neighbour - the mainland - Tasmania presents endless variety within a compact space.
Visualize the Republic of Ireland, or Hokkaido in Japan, or multiply Switzerland twice...in this small area you will witness landscapes which change from green rainforested valleys, peaks and highland lakes to long glistening impossibly white beaches, towering sea cliffs and cities that are not yet overwhelming; that belongs to the scenery. Often these contrasts are all within a 90-minute drive.
It has a climate which is maritime and mild. Yet most of our island state is beyond definition.
Explore Tasmania. Our regions (that's them over on the left) will delight you with their differences. You can cram as little or as much as you want into your time in this special place. Don't make the mistake of thinking it is so small that you will see it all in a few days, in a hurry. Your holiday is not about hurrying!
Relax, play, tour, chill out, reflect, enjoy. Decide where to stay, what to see, and experience our well known sites - the ones you've heard about. But your most special moments will be finding places to make your own. That's why we're called DiscoverTasmania.
