World's Most Congested Cities

As there is a saying, that there are two sides of a coin likewise on one side, the world is turning into a global village and on the other side population explosion all over the globe in is affecting many of its inhabitants to a great extent.

According to the latest UN report, the world's urban population is now close to 3.9 billion and is expected to reach 6.3 billion in 2050. Because of which, the world is getting congested day by day.

1. Sao Paulo

The largest city in Brazil and the most populated in South America, Sao Paulo, owing to its growing population is today one of the most congested city in the world.

The city maintains strong international influence and hence considered as an Alpha World City. According to experts, between the years 2011 and 2025, the city will have one of the highest economic growths of any city in the world, trailing only New York City, U.S. and Tokyo, Japan.

Being a popular hub for arts and entertainment, the city most of the time emerge as a great tourists spot. Alongside it also has some significant cultural, economic and political influence both nationally and internationally and hence, is preferred by the millionaires.

2. Warsaw

The Polish capital, Warsaw over the past few years has seen major infrastructural changes amidst increased foreign investment and economic growth.

The city has a much-improved infrastructure with new roads, flyovers and bridges. Public transport in Warsaw is ubiquitous, serving the city with buses, tramways, and metro.

Because of its advancement, many people throng to this city, making it as one of the crowded cities in the world.

3. Beijing

China's capital city, Beijing is the center of government and the most congested area in the country. The city, with around 20 million city dwellers and a population density of 3,200 people per square mile has the distinction of being one of the most over crowded cities in the world.

The city has been in existence for over 3,000 years. It is a city rich in history and culture, and is surrounded by modern architectural wonders on all sides. The Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China, and the Olympic Stadium are some of the wonders to be seen in Beijing.

The city also has a rich gastronomic culture, with places like the Wangfujing food street where cuisines from diverse Chinese provinces can be savored. Despite its many attractions, Beijing is considered relatively cheaper when it comes to living standards.

4. Brussels

The capital of Belgium, Brussels, is listed in the world's most congested cities. The city is the biggest urban agglomeration and hence most of the places in and around the city are overcrowded.

The city's population with 1.1 million approximately and over 1.8 million population in the metropolitan area greatly attribute to the high congestion level in the city.

5. Paris

Mostly known for its fantastic museums and of course the Eiffel Tower, Paris has become a pioneer in the smart cities arena.

This city has led the world in their expensive and widely used bike sharing network, 'Velib'.

Currently, the system has more than 20,000 bikes and 1,800 bikes throughout the city. Evidence suggests that Velib has led to a 5 percent reduction in vehicle congestion in the city.

Paris has also managed to foster a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. All this attributed to list this city among the congested cities in the world.

6. Mexico City

An important financial hub for North America located in the Valley of Mexico, Mexico City is the largest valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 metres (7,350 ft).

The city was built by the Aztec's and was nearly destroyed in the siege of Tenochtitlan in 1521. After being rebuilt, the city officially was known as Ciudad de Mexico.

As a city, Mexico ranks on the 4th place in terms of population, with almost 8.6 million inhabitants. In fact, it is also ranks as the largest city in North America.

Mexico City has a GDP of about $390 billion that makes up the one quarter of nation's GDP. It is now the 8th richest metropolitan city on the globe and is one of the most congested cities in the world with a population of 19,463,000.

7. Los Angeles

The global city, Los Angeles is one of the most congested cities in the world. It is also the most populous city in California and the second most populous in the United States, after New York City.

Since, LA has strengths in business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine and research; it has been ranked sixth in the Global Cities Index and ninth in Global Economic Power Index.

8. New Delhi

India's Capital New Delhi with 25 million inhabitants has become one of the world's most crowded cities.

Delhi and its extended suburbs, with its population of 22.7 million as of 2011, is the second most populous urban sprawl in the world after Tokyo.
With the growing number of inhabitants in the capital, the city is getting congested day by day.

As such, Delhi is expected to retain the spot of the world's second most populous city through at least 2030, when its population is expected to rise swiftly to 36 million.
