Go Tripping: The World’s Wildest Optical Illusions
Called will-o'-the-wisps or jack-o'-lanterns in England, spook lights in America and spunkies by Scots - though known by different names, they are all referring to a light that appears at night, often in peaty ground. It might appear to follow you and on being followed, it will back off. Most cultures view these lights as evil spirits that allure tourists to doom, or harbingers of disaster. Lake Paasselka in Finland is well-known for these mysterious orbs of light and are believed to mark the sites of treasure in Finnish folklore.
