A Geopark Is A Unique Natural Area With Special Geological Significance And Natural And Cultural Landscapes, And Serves The Three Objectives Of Conservation, Education And Sustained Development.

A Geopark Serves To Conserve The Unique Landforms And Landscapes In Hong Kong, Through Protecting The Landform Environment That Provides Natural Habitat To Many Living Things. Such An Integrated Conservation Strategy Is Also A Global Trend. Therefore, We Are Establishing The Geopark To Promote Landform And Rock Conservation.

Geoparks Meeting Prescribed Conditions May Be Listed As National And Global. Now, China Has 183 National Geoparks, With 26 Designated As Global, Out Of The 87 Global Geoparks In The World. We Believe That The Initiative To Upgrade The Hong Kong Geopark To A National Geopark Will Provide Momentum For Local Nature Conservation And Will Be A Focal Point For Further Action By The Government And The Interested Parties.

Hong Kong, As Part Of China, May Leverage On The Initiative Of Establishing A National Geopark To Display To The World Its Natural Conservation Results Which Hong Kong People Are Proud Of. The International Image Of Hong Kong Does Not Have To Be Just A City With Many Buildings But Can Also Be A Natural And Healthy International Metropolis.

High Island

The High Island Geo-Area Is Located In Sai Kung East Country Park, And Extends Along The Coast From East To Northeast Of The High Island Reservoir. It Is About 20 Km From Sai Kung Town Centre. Neatly Arranged, Nearly Vertical And Towering Polygonal (Usually Hexagonal) Volcanic Rock Columns Are Exposed Along The Coast Of High Island. On The Seaward Cliff Of Fa Shan, The Volcanic Rock Columns Are The Highest In Hong Kong, With A Height Of Over 100 M, Forming What Is Known As A "Natural Hexagonal Column Mural". At, The East Dam Of The High Island Reservoir Is The High Island Geo Trail, With Interpretation Signs That Introduce The Interesting Geological Features Of The Area, Such As Faults, Twisted Rock Columns, Dyke And Sea Stack. In Addition, The Tai Long Wan Coast Showcases A Breathtaking Coastal Landscape Which Is Made Of Volcanic Rocks.

Yung Kong Group

Yung Kong Group Geo-Area Is Located South Of High Island And Northwest Of The Ninepin Group,About 12 Km From Sai Kung Town Centre. The Geo-Area Includes Wang Chau, Basalt Island, Bluff Island And Kam Chung Ngam Of Jin Island, All Of Which Are Underlain By Columnar-Jointed Volcanic Rocks. They Exhibit The Same Rock Type Found On High Island And The Ninepin Group,. The Extended Impact Of Wind And Waves On These Volcanic Rock Columns On The Coast Of The Ung Kong Group Has Resulted In Magnificent And Spectacular Coastal Landforms, Such As Steep Cliffs, Sea Caves And Sea Arches. The Steep Cliff Along The Southeast Coast Of Bluff Island Is The Highest In Hong Kong, With A Height Of Over 140 M. The 45m-High Sea Arch On Basalt Island, 30m-High High Sea Arch On Wang Chau, 24m-High Sha Tong Hou Cave On Bluff Island And Tiu Chung Arch On Tiu Chung Chau, Are The Top Four Sea Arches In Hong Kong. As The Ung Kong Group Is Within The Core Protection Area, And In View Of The Strong Wind, Big Waves And Dangerous Terrain, Sightseeing Is Suitable Only On Calm Summer Days, And Only Boat Tours With No Land Excursion.

Ninepin Island

Located About 15 Km Southeast Of Sai Kung Town Centre, The Ninepin Group Comprises South Ninepin Island, North Ninepin Island And East Ninepin Island, Along With Several Small Rock Islets. It Is Located In The Open Sea And Is Thus Subject To The Relentless Impact Of Strong Wind And Waves, Resulting In Diverse Peculiar Coastal Landforms, Including Steep Cliffs, Sea Arches And Various Strangely-Shaped Rocks. Famous Scenic Wonders On North Ninepin Island Include Cannon Rock, Moon Rocks And Big Stove Arch; And On South Ninepin Island Include Stone Arch, Jacob's Ladder Cave, Backwash Cave And Y-Shaped Cave. In The Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region, The Hexagonal Rock Columns Exposed On North Ninepin Are The Most Magnificent. The Columns May Have A Diameter Of Over 2 M, Making Them The Largest In The Area. As The Ninepin Group Is Within The Core Protection Area, And In View Of The Strong Wind, Big Waves And Dangerous Terrain, Sightseeing Is Suitable Only On Calm Summer Days, And Only Boat Tours With No Land Excursion.

Sharp Island

Sharp Island Is Located About 2 Km Southeast Of Sai Kung Town Centre. It Is Convenient For Visitors To Get To Sharp Island By Kaido From Sai Kung Pier. A Single Journey Takes About 15 Minutes. Sharp Island Is The Perfect Place To Learn About Igneous Rocks, As It Is Rich In Various Igneous Rocks, Such As Volcanic Breccia, Rhyolite, Tuff And Quartz Monzonite. At Low Tide, A Gravel Tombolo Emerges, Linking Sharp Island With Kiu Tau, Allowing Visitors To Walk To Kiu Tau Along The Tombolo. The End Of The Sharp Island Geo Trail Is Located At The Top Of Kiu Tau, Where Visitors Can Enjoy Gorgeous Landscapes In The Panoramic View Of Clear Water Bay Peninsula And Port Shelter. As The Tombolo Will Be Submerged At High Tide, The Tidal Information Posted On The Hong Kong Observatory's Website Should Be Checked Before Setting Off.

Double Haven

As A Result Of The Rise In Sea Level About 12,000 Years Ago, At The End Of The Last Glacial Period, The Mountains And Valleys In The Double Haven Area Became Submerged, Forming Indented Shorelines With Headlands And Bays. The Picturesque Double Haven Is Also Known As Little Guilin" And "Little Xihu" And According To One Saying, "Double Haven Is Just As Beautiful As Suzhou And Hangzhou". The Rocks In The Double Haven Area Are Mainly The Younger Late Cretaceous Red Sedimentary Rocks And Older Jurassic Tuff. Located On The West Shore Of Double Haven, Lai Chi Wo Presents A Typical And Well Preserved Hakka Walled Village, Which Is A Good Place To Learn About Hakka Culture And Traditional Chinese Architecture. Yan Chau Tong Marine Park Has Rich Ecological Resources, Including Mangroves, Seagrass Beds, Mudflats And Coral Communities.

North And South Coasts Of Tolo Channel

The Tolo Channel Geo-Area Includes The North Shore Of Tolo Channel, Ma Shi Chau On The Southwest Shore And Lai Chi Chong On The South Shore. Most Of The Rocks Along The North Shore Of Tolo Channel And At Bluff Head Are The Oldest In Hong Kong, Formed About 400 Million Years Ago During The Devonian Period. Ma Shi Chau Presents The Sedimentary Rocks Formed About 280 Million Years Ago; The Rocks Are The Second Oldest Rocks In The Rock Region; Lai Chi Chong Showcases Various Volcanic Rocks And Sedimentary Rocks Formed About 146 Million Years Ago. These Two Geo-Sites Also Show Distinctive Geological Features, Such As Faults And Folds. Although The Geology Of Ma Shi Chau And Lai Chi Chong Is A Bit Complicated, They Are The Ideal Destinations For Geologists.

Port Island Wong Chuk Kok Tsui

Bluff Head (Wong Chuk Kok Tsui) Has The Oldest Rocks In Hong Kong, Formed By Deposits At Estuarine Deltas About 400 Million Years Ago During The Devonian Period. The Sedimentary Rocks Here Were Originally Horizontal But Have Now Become Nearly Vertical Due To Deformation. The Famous Landmark Called "Devil's Fist" Emerged Due To Coastal Erosion. Two Thirds Of Port Island (Chek Chau) Consists Of Red Sedimentary Rocks, Which Are Mainly Conglomeratesandstone And Siltstone, Formed About 100 Million Years Ago During The Late Cretaceous Period. At That Time, The Climate Was Dry And Hot, And Iron In The Sediments Oxidized, Turning The Rocks Red. Other Famous Scenic Wonders Are "Lost City In Desert" And "Kau Tau Shek (Dog's Head)".

Tung Ping Chau

Tung Ping Chau Has The Youngest Rocks In Hong Kong Which Are Only 55 Million Years Old. These Sedimentary Rocks Are Thinly Layered Siltstones, Which Look Like A Delicious "Layer Cake". The Ping Chau Country Trail Is Equipped With Interpretation Signs To Introduce The Various Geological Features And Coastal Landforms, Such As A Wave-Cut Platform, Sea Cliff And Sea Stacks. Also, Tung Ping Chau Marine Park Has A Rich And Valuable Coastal Ecosystem, Including Stony Corals, Reef-Associated Fish Species, Marine Invertebrates And Algae Beds. Famous Scenic Wonders Include Kang Lau Shek, Lan Kwo Shui,Lung Lok Shui And Cham Keng Chau.
