Jaisalmer Fort, Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer Fort, Jaisalmer
The fort of Jaisalmer famous as 'Sonar Killa' is in itself a small fortified town, about 5000 people still reside in its imposing walls. Jaisalmer Fort is situated in the middle of the Thar Desert, with its huge turrets pointing skywards. Built in 1156, Jaisalmer of Rajasthan is the second oldest of Rajasthan's major forts after Chittorgarh in Rajasthan. Jaisalmer Fort was constructed by Raja Jaisal, he built the fort and the city surrounding it and changed as the capital city.

The Jaisalmer Fort is 250 feet height and is vaulted on all sides by the stimulating wall built of sandstone that climbs to an elevation of 30 feet. Carved of stone are 99 bastions which were used as platforms for guns. 92 of these bastions were built between the years 1633 to 1647. Yellow sandstone lends the golden color to the fort that lures tourists from all over the world. An exceptional architectural characteristic of the beautiful fort of Jaisalmer was the odd instrument at the top of the building that was used to forecast weather during the ancient times. The direction of the flag on the device would point out the weather conditions of the entire year.

Today museums are still inhabited, and their colourful celebrations and festivals have placed Jaisalmer Fort firmly on the world tourism map.
