Aldabra Island, Seychelles
The world's second largest Coral atoll, Aldabra is one of the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, which is more than 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) from Mahe, the largest island of the Seychelles. With a total area of 60 square miles (155.4 kms) and them being divided into four individual islands, the Aldabra Islands are closer to the coast of Africa. Known to humanity for centuries, these islands whose name has an Arabic origin, brings along a mystery s to why it has not been able to sustain even a small human settlement.
Due to the obscurity of access and the atoll's isolation, Aldabra is virtually unscathed by humans and as a result preserves some 152,000 giant tortoises, the world's largest population of this reptile. They are one of the world's longest-living animals, with an average lifespan of 100 years or more. The atoll is also acknowledged for the Coconut crab, the world's largest land crab, and hammerhead sharks, manta rays, barracuda and as a breeding ground for green turtles and hawksbill turtles.
