The first world Heritage Day was celebrated on every 18th April by the International Council of Monuments and Sites in Tunisia and was approved in 1983 by UNESCO. The day marks the necessity of protecting the historical monuments and sites situated in every part of the world by making collective efforts at international level various awareness camps and functions were organised across the world on this particular day dedecated to protect heritage sites in various parts of the World. World Heritage Day marks a specific theme every year and this year also the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has decided a theme for World Heritage Day 2013, which is "Heritage in Education" and its " Expressions in Diverse Geo-cultural Contexts".This special day offers a global opportunity to raise public awareness and educate the public on the related issues as well.
The idea was also approved by the UNESCO General Conference who passed a resolution at its 22nd session in November 1983 recommending that Member States examine the possibility of declaring 18 April each year âÂÂInternational Monuments and Sites DayâÂÂ. This has been traditionally called the World Heritage Day.
