10 Bizarre Landscapes on Earth
2. Moeraki Boulders, New Zealand
The strange and quirky looking boulders are located along a stretch of Koekohe Beach on the Otago coast of New Zealand. These boulders occur either isolated or in clusters. The area where these boulders lie has been protected in the form of a scientific reserve. The number of boulders has reduced over the period of time because of the constant waves wearing them out. In 1848 W.B.D. Mantell sketched the beach and its boulders, more numerous than now.
Legends: The Maori people have many legends surrounding the existence of these boulders. The legends explain that the boulders are the remains of eel baskets, kumara and calabashes which were washed ashore from the wreck of an Arai-te-uru, a large sailing canoe.
