10 Bizarre Landscapes on Earth
3. Gates to Hell, Turkmenistan
Though this is a man made bizarre landscape, it had to feature in this list because of a few strange points leading to its formation and existence till date. Derweze is an area in Turkmenistan which is rich in natural gas.
The Darvaza Gas Crater, also known as Gates to Hell, has ablaze since 1971. During an expedition a group of Soviet Geologist stumbled onto a cavern filled with natural gas. While drilling, owing to the delicate nature of the crust the ground collapsed, exposing a huge hole. The group thought that the gas was methane and in order to prevent the gas from poisoning the surrounding they decided to burn it off. But unfortunately it wasn't poisonous and the fire that was lit in 1971 continues to blaze away till today. The fire will only end the day the gas finishes. No one knows how much gas we have and are losing because of the fire.
