Azhagar Kovil, also popular as Thirumaliruncholai or Alagar temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is situated 21 km from the city of Madurai. The building is supposed to be constructed in the 3rd or 4th century and according to certain scholars it was a Jain Temple in the beginning, which got converted to a Vishnu temple later on. The temple is built on a scenic spot, amidst the ruins of a historic fort. On the main tower, one will come across stunning sculptures portraying scenes from the epics.
