India's Biggest and Most Popular Railway Stations
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Maharashtra : Formerly known as Victoria Terminus, this station was built in 1887 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
Originally named after the Queen but soon changed to Chhatrapati Shivaji, the famous 17th Century king of Maharashtra. Designed by the British architect Fredrick William Stevens, it is influenced by Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival and Mughal architecture and is considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. CST is one of the busiest stations in India that serves as a terminal for both short distance and long distance trains.
Kanpur Central, Uttar Pradesh : Built in 1930, Kanpur Central is one of the busiest railway stations of North Central Railways and it holds the record for having the world's largest route interlocking system.
Besides, this station witnesses more than 1.5 lakh passengers and over 280 trains every day. The Charbhag Station in Lucknow inspired the stations' building but complete recreation was not possible due to lack of funds. Kanpur Central is currently going under construction so that it can improvise its look and infrastructure.
