Vijaydurg Fort

Originally known as Gheriya, the fort was once a symbol of the power of the Maratha dynasty with many impressive features such as its triple lining of huge walls, numerous towers and spacious interior buildings.

The fort was built by Raja Bhoja of the Shilahar dynasty.It was later captured and renamed Vijaydurg by Adil Shah of Bijapur.
Also called the Victory Fort , Vidyadurg is also known for its contribution to the discovery of helium by the English scientist sir Norman Lockyer.

The fort is located on the mouth of the river Vaghotan which separates the districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudarg.
