Dallol in the Danakil Depression, in Ethiopia is a volcanic explosion carter. This crater was formed by the intrusion of basaltic magma in Miocene salt deposits and subsequent hydrothermal activity. The name to this volcano was given by the Afar People and it basically means dissolution. The landscape is made of green acid ponds, sulfur, iron oxide and salt desert plains. This is the lowest volcano on land in the world. The volcanic vents are at 150 ft below the sea level. Along with being the lowest volcano, it is also the hottest place on earth. Dallol Volcano gets its unusual landscape form the presence of sulfur, iron hydroxide and ferris chloride colour.
Amazing Fact: Around 30,000 years ago this land was connected to the Red Sea. But it got separated because the volcanic activity in the areas surrounding the Gulf of Zula created a barrier and prevented the sea water from flowing into the area. Since the land was low, it would flood, but as the flood waters receded, partial evaporation of the sea water occurred, which over a long period resulted in thick salt deposits.
