Gangotri

The shrine is situated amongst deodars and pine trees at an elevation of 3200 mt. There is a natural Shivalinga submerged in the river. According to Hindu mythology Lord Shiva sat here when He received the Goddess Ganga in His matted locks. The sacred stone near the temple symbolizes the place where Ganga first came down to earth. The place is on the northernmost part of Uttar Khand and is very near to the Indo-Tibetan border. It is approximately 300 km from Dehradun, and 105 km from Uttarkashi. Devotees are allowed to visit only in the months of May to November
