Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve

New Natural Wonders of the World

The biosphere reserve lies within forested mountains about 100 km northwest of Mexico City. More than millions of butterflies return to this area every autumn and cluster on small areas of the forest reserve. These butterflies bend tree branches by their weight and make sounds that resemble light rain. The mission of the biosphere is to protect the butterfly species along with its ecosystem. This area was known to scientists since 1970s and protection of the area began in the 1980s.
