New Natural Wonders of the World
Surtsey
Surtsey is a volcanic island on the southern coast of Iceland. The island was formed by a volcanic eruption which began in the year 1963 and lasted till 1967. In the eruption, small islands such as Jolnir were also created along with Surtsey. But most of them eroded away quickly. Surtsey provides information on plant and animal colonization and is also free from human interference. It is also a favourite resting place for migrating birds ad seals.
