It is known to be the highest pass on the ancient caravan route between Leh in Ladakh and Yarkhand. There is an almost total absence of vegetation on the approaches to the pass due to which infinite number of animals die. The term 'Karakoram' actually means 'Black Gravel' in Turkic. This pass is an older route that has been used since ancient times by traders and pilgrims traversing India and Tibet.
5. Sela Pass: The Sela Pass is another high-altitude mountain pass with an elevation of 4170 m (13,700 ft), located in Tawang District of Arunachal Pradesh. It connects Tawang to rest of India through Tezpur and Guwahati. It receives heavy snowfall throughout the year. The Pass is very close to the beautiful Sela Lake which is usually found fully or partially frozen in winter. It is said to be under snow for most of the years but gives some heavenly views. Vegetation is nil on this pass as it is covered with snow throughout the year.
