The Wonders of Stone Temples Down South

Thanjavur:
temple

One of the significant temples here is the Brihadeeshwara Temple. With more than 70 temples built during the Cholas era, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was built during the 11th Century and has one of the tallest gopurams with a height of 66 meters. The whole temple is built out of granite with a single stone, which is unbelievable in today's world!
In the entrance you will find a huge nandi carved out, which is believed to be Lord Shiva's vehicle. Another unique feature of the temple is that; you will find the sculptures of 'Ashta- Dikpalakas' who are the guardians of directions in a separate temple complex.
There are numerous paintings present in the temple premises; where the innermost sanctum lies within the temple. This is the sacred linga.
